The Un-Official Newsletter of
The Long Point Retriever Training Club
The LONG POINT RETRIEVER TRAINING CLUB was established in the early 1960's. Currently the membership consists of individuals from almost every walk of life who are interested in Retrievers, whether Labrador, Golden, Flat Coat or Chesapeake Bays. The club fosters the Retriever as a hunting dog, field trial dog and companion. In addition, it promotes good breeding.
Retrievers are known as dogs, which can brave the coldest water, search the heaviest cover and navigate thick mud and marsh to retrieve their quarry, be it duck, goose, pheasant or partridge. They are useful as well in the flushing of game. They are intelligent, have good memories, and are understanding and faithful dogs. These qualities make them excellent pets. Gentle with children, they also make good watchdogs and will bark if strangers appear unannounced.
The Long Point Retriever Training Club usually arranges training sessions during which interested people can enjoy training their dogs to retrieve in the out of doors. Membership in the club is open to any owner of a registered Retriever. Members of the club are always pleased to discuss the acquisition and training of a dog with the newcomer.
In addition to training sessions, the Club holds a CKC licensed Field Trial (June) and Hunt Test (August) each year. Dogs which place in the Field Trials earn points towards Championship titles, while dogs who pass the hunt tests work their way toward becoming Master Hunters.

2005 National News:
Wow....What a ride!! Now that the 2005 National is in the history books many thoughts and emotions can be expressed. First I would like to congratulate the Winner....Comstocks Bodatious owned and handled by Anne Marshall. What a Job Well done!

A Thank-You:
I would like to extend my appreciation to every member of the Long Point Retriever Training Club for their hard work and devotion to the 2005
National. With Ron Modesto's experience with Nationals and leadership skills as our Chairman, we all pulled together and put on a National to be
proud of, which was both enjoyable and profitable.
Happy Holidays, and thanks to all.......
Larry DeLeemans, Past President, LPRTC.
Humour:
This month from Jenny De Leemans:
THIS IS SOME GOOD ADVICE!
If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be
pure ecstasy.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do..
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout..! run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Training Tips:
Internet Tools
This edition let's look at how the World Wide Web can help us in our training. There are numerous resources available to any trainer with an internet conection that will aid in our day to day training. The first thing We can do when sourcing this valuable information is to use a quality search engine to help find out Web Sites that deal with our training issues. The Search engine I usually start with is Google. http://www.google.ca This site is one of the best know, fastest and most in-depth search site available. Another great source of other ideas for Web sites available is found in the "Links" section of the many Sites that you may have visited. The National Retriever Club of Canada site http://www.nrcc-canada.com has a great number of links that will take you to other resources such as the CKC Web Page http://www.ckc.ca.
Here is a short list of some of the Web sights I have found recently that I found training articles and ideas.
http://www.totalretriever.com Mike Lardy's Web site
http://www.ponderosakennel.com Pat Nolan's Web site
http://www.retrieversonline.com Denis Voight's site
http://www.working-retriver.comUnited States National's site
http://www.tritronics.com Tritronics Electronic's site
Another interesting way of finding valueable information on training is to participate in Training Bulletin Boards available on the Web. One that I have been contributing to and enjoying is:
http://www.retrievertraining.net
Judging Tool
I found this article on the net the other day. I really feel it is a Must Read for all that are looking to understand a Judges role....and all those who want understand What is going through a Judges mind when your being judged.

Litters and Such:
JOY PREMIUM DOG FOOD. I recently purchased 5 bags of dog food as I have not been happy with my current premium dog food - neither the price or the product or results on my dogs. Some of you may know Jim Ling and that he is Ontario distributor of this line of dog food. I put Frodo on it and his coat and teeth have improved as has his weight. To add to this the price is 1/2 the price of my previous dog food and the bags are 50 lbs and not 40 (approx. $25 a bag). Jim would like me to be a dealer of the food in the area which means that I would have to purchase 40+ bags at a time. If enough people were willing to give it a try - I would be interested as it would make it easier for me to get the food for my own needs.
I questioned some field trialers in the states and they gave me names of field trialers currently using it and Jim gave me the following list:Here are some that are feeding it-Lorne Longevin,Shirley Greener,Dave Thompson.,Jim Green,Dave Beacock Albert C.,Howard Yee.,Peter Martin.,Bill Cumming. Lynne Hare. Reports are that it is a quality feed and at a reasonable price.
If any of the club members or friends are interested in obtaining more information on the food or prices, they can contact me 875-4200 or pj@kwic.com. I have asked Jim to send me a bundle of brochures and a price list. You can also stop by and check out the food for yourself .
