Re-creating a "Publisher's Binding" and missing pages
A mid 19th Century binding with printed boards, as originally issued by the publisher.
The tattered original cloth spine remnants, and severely worn printed board were deemed unsuitable for salvage.
This copy was also missing the rear board, endpapers,
and the last two printed leaves [four pages] of the text-block.
Cover remnants were removed and the text-block given a complete restoration.
The client was able to supply (via e-mail attachments) graphic files of the four missing pages from another copy.
These pages were then printed graphically...
...and sewn into the restored text-block, along with new endpapers.
New boards were cut and a quarter-cloth (spine only) binding was made.
A printed paper label, created using elements from the original titlepage, was then added.
Finally, the original printed cover was recreated from the title-page, thus matching as closely as possible, the aesthetics of the original binding. |
Note: a suitable owner's notation was added to the completed book - indicating what facsimile work had been included in this restored copy.
